Furnari is a village on Sicily’s northern coast between Milazzo and Capo d’Orlando, and Marina Portorosa on its shore is the largest charter base for the Aeolian islands: Vulcano is three hours away, Lipari four, Stromboli a day. The fleet is sailing yachts and catamarans for the classic Aeolian week — seven volcanic islands, buoys rather than marinas, and Stromboli erupting after dark.
The season is May to October; July and August are hot and the Panarea buoys fill, while June and September have the same islands with fewer boats. Catania airport is an hour and a half away, Palermo two.
Getting there
By air. Catania Airport (CTA) is about 130 km — an hour and a half by taxi or transfer on the A18/A20 motorways; Palermo (PMO) about 170 km, two hours. By road and rail. The A20 Messina–Palermo motorway exit Falcone is five minutes from the marina; Furnari railway station is on the Messina–Palermo line. Paid parking inside the marina.
Furnari before you cast off
Tindari, with its Greek theatre and black-madonna sanctuary on the cliff, is 10 km east and looks down on the lagoon of Marinello; Milazzo’s castle and the Aeolian ferry port are 25 minutes away. Taormina and Etna are day trips for crews arriving early.
A supermarket at the marina and larger ones in Furnari and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto; the marina has a fuel dock, chandlery and restaurants.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a yacht charter in Furnari cost?
Day rates on the boats listed here start from €128 and the typical boat is around €464 per day; a week (7 nights) starts from €899. Prices are the boats’ own listed rates; fuel, marina fees on the route and local taxes are paid separately.
What kinds of boats can I charter in Furnari?
135 boats are available to book in Furnari: 87 sailing boats and 48 catamarans. The most common models are Lagoon 42, Oceanis 46.1, Dufour 470, Oceanis 51.1.
Can I take a boat out for just one day?
Yes — 1 boat here accept a single-day booking. A day rate is quoted for the specific boat and date, so pick your day on the boat’s own page and the price comes back live.
What is not in the price?
The figure is for the boat. Transit log, tourist tax and the APA are mandatory, set per boat, and paid at the base. Skipper, hostess, extra equipment and other services are optional and also settled at the base.
Why do some boats show no price?
46 of the 135 boats in Furnari are on request — usually larger or crewed yachts, where the rate depends on the week and the crew. They are left out of every figure above.
How far is the airport from Furnari?
The nearest airport is Reggio Calabria Airport (REG), about 50 km away as the crow flies; Catania Airport (CTA) is about 75 km. Transfer times by road are longer; most charter companies arrange a transfer to the base on request.
Do I need a licence to charter bareboat in Italy?
For a sailing yacht or any boat with a larger engine, yes: a recognised skipper’s licence is checked at handover. Small motorboats with engines under 40 hp can be hired without one. Without a licence, a skipper is booked as an extra on the boat page.
What day do charters start?
Weekly charters run Saturday to Saturday: handover in the late afternoon and return to the base the evening before check-out at 9:00. Day charters start in the morning from the same pontoons.
Can we see Stromboli erupt from the boat?
Yes — the classic evening of an Aeolian week is anchored off the Sciara del Fuoco on Stromboli’s north-west side after dark, watching the crater; the boat then moves to Ficogrande or Ginostra for the night.
Are there marinas in the Aeolian islands?
Only small ones — Lipari, Salina and Vulcano have pontoons and quays; elsewhere the week is on buoys and at anchor, so a crew should be comfortable with that, or take a skipper.
