Turkey — at a glance

643 boats are available to book across 16 departure bases. The largest are Fethiye (261), Marmaris (170), Bodrum (88). The fleet is 324 sailing boats, 161 catamarans and trimarans, 118 gulets, 29 motor yachts. Weekly prices start from €997 for a gulet; every price on this page is the boat’s own listed rate for 7 nights, before extras.

When to go

Turkey sails from April to October, a longer season than most of the Mediterranean. May, June and September are the best months: warm enough to swim, cool enough to sleep and quiet in the bays. July and August are hot, with afternoon temperatures well over thirty degrees, and the popular anchorages of the Göcek bays fill with boats, though a crew always finds a corner. The meltemi reaches the Turkish coast weaker than the Greek islands opposite; the prevailing summer wind is a sea breeze that builds after noon. Gulet cruises, the crewed wooden boats the coast is known for, run across the whole season, and cabin charters on shared gulets are the cheapest way to try one. Weekly charters start on Saturday; flotillas out of Fethiye and Göcek run from May to October.

Where to sail in Turkey

Sailing holidays in Fethiye and Göcek

Sailing holidays in Fethiye and Göcek — Turkey

Fethiye is the largest base in Turkey and Göcek, forty minutes along the same gulf, the second: classic blue-cruise territory with dozens of pine-fringed bays within an hour of each other, the Twelve Islands, Ölüdeniz and the Butterfly Valley, very little open sea and mooring that costs little or nothing if you eat ashore. Dalaman airport is thirty minutes from both. A week runs east to Kaş and the sunken city at Kekova, or west to the Datça peninsula.

Yacht charter in Marmaris and the Hisarönü gulf

Yacht charter in Marmaris and the Hisarönü gulf — Turkey

Marmaris has a large marina, easy provisioning and routes both north towards Bodrum and east towards Fethiye; Orhaniye and Bozburun on the Hisarönü gulf are quieter starts on the Datça peninsula, with Symi and the Greek Dodecanese a few miles off. A good base for a mix of marina nights and empty bays, and the home port of much of the gulet fleet.

Boat rental in Bodrum and the Gulf of Gökova

Boat rental in Bodrum and the Gulf of Gökova — Turkey

The busiest base after Fethiye, well connected by air, and the gateway to a gulf of warm sheltered water, restaurant pontoons and the Datça peninsula beyond; Yalıkavak, Türkbükü and Torba on the north side of the peninsula are the day-charter and motor-yacht ports. Kos is a few miles across the strait.

Yacht charter in Antalya, Çeşme and Istanbul

Yacht charter in Antalya, Çeşme and Istanbul — Turkey

Antalya and Demre open the Lycian coast from the east, with Kekova and Kaş a day away and fewer charter boats; Çeşme near Izmir faces Chios and the northern Aegean; Istanbul has a small fleet for day and evening cruises on the Bosphorus and the Princes' Islands, booked by the hour rather than the week.

Bareboat, skippered or crewed

Bareboat charter is possible in Turkey with a recognised licence - the ICC or a national equivalent, and most operators ask for a VHF certificate too - but the market is built around crewed boats: gulets with captain, cook and deckhand, and skippered sailing yachts and catamarans. The crew premium is small because crewed is the norm, which makes a crewed week in Turkey cheaper per person than almost anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Day boats from Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Antalya are skippered as standard, so "boat rental without licence" here means a boat with a captain.

Types of boats in Turkey

Sailing yachts of 40 to 50 feet are the largest group on this page, based mainly in Fethiye, Göcek and Marmaris; catamarans are the next and growing. Gulets are Turkey's signature boat and the largest part of the crewed fleet, from twelve-berth family boats to thirty-metre luxury gulets out of Bodrum and Marmaris. Motor yachts and day boats are concentrated in Bodrum and Antalya.
