Croatia — at a glance

2,137 boats are available to book across 56 departure bases. The largest are Sukošan (277), Split (256), Trogir (174). The fleet is 1,115 sailing boats, 519 catamarans and trimarans, 298 motor boats, 152 motor yachts. Weekly prices start from €612 for a sailing boat; every price on this page is the boat’s own listed rate for 7 nights, before extras.

When to go

The Croatian season runs from May to October, and weekly charters are counted Saturday to Saturday. June and September are the months experienced crews pick: the sea is already, or still, warm, the harbours have space in the evening, and prices sit well below high summer. July and August are hot, busy and at their most expensive; the popular quays on Hvar, Vis and Korčula fill by mid-afternoon and the buoy fields in the Kornati are booked days ahead. April, May and October are quiet and noticeably cheaper, with cooler water, empty anchorages and a higher chance of a bora, the cold north-easterly that arrives with a day or two of warning and can keep boats in port. Summer wind is the maestral, a sea breeze from the north-west that builds after lunch and dies at dusk, which suits short morning passages and afternoon sailing. Day boats and RIBs run from April to October in the south and are busiest in the six weeks either side of August. Last-minute discounts appear from late August on the weeks that did not sell.

Yacht charter in Split and Central Dalmatia

Yacht charter in Split and Central Dalmatia — Croatia

The largest fleet in the country and the easiest week: Brač, Šolta, Hvar, Vis and the Pakleni islands are all within two to four hours of the marinas at Split, Trogir, Kaštel Gomilica and Seget Donji. Stari Grad, Vis town and Komiža are the classic overnight stops; Palmižana on the Pakleni islands is the afternoon anchorage everyone ends up in. Split airport is twenty minutes from every base, which is why most first charters in Croatia start here.

Boat rental in Zadar, Šibenik and the Kornati islands

Boat rental in Zadar, Šibenik and the Kornati islands — Croatia

The northern islands are quieter and the Kornati national park is the highlight: over a hundred bare limestone islands with buoys instead of marinas, best combined with Telašćica on Dugi Otok and the Krka river up to Skradin. Sukošan, just south of Zadar, is the biggest marina in the Adriatic and the single largest base on this page; Šibenik, Primošten, Rogoznica and Murter are the closest starts for the park itself.

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik and southern Dalmatia

Yacht charter in Dubrovnik and southern Dalmatia — Croatia

Fewer, greener islands and longer views: the Elaphiti islands, Mljet with its national park lakes, Korčula's walled town and the Pelješac peninsula. Boats leave from the marina at Komolac in the Rijeka Dubrovačka and from Gruž harbour, ten minutes from the old town, and Montenegro's Bay of Kotor is a day's sail south across an international border.

Sailing in Istria and the Kvarner gulf

Sailing in Istria and the Kvarner gulf — Croatia

The north, from Pula and the Brijuni islands to Cres, Lošinj, Rab and Krk, is the choice for crews arriving by road from Austria, Germany and Italy. Distances between islands are longer, the towns are Venetian, and the bora is strongest here in spring and autumn. Pula has the airport and the larger fleet; Punat on Krk is a bridge away from Rijeka.

Bareboat, skippered or crewed

Croatia is strict about bareboat: the skipper must hold a licence recognised by the Croatian authorities and a VHF certificate, and both are checked at the base before departure. Without a licence the law allows only a boat up to 5 metres with an engine up to 5 kW (6.8 hp), from 18 years old and within 500 metres of the shore - which is why "boat rental without licence" in Croatia usually means a skippered day boat. A skippered week removes the paperwork and, in practice, gets a crew to the better buoys earlier; skippers here know which restaurant pontoons take boats for free and which bays are rolly at night. Crewed yachts and gulets are common from Split and Dubrovnik. Day charters are almost always skippered, on motorboats and RIBs from the same bases.

Types of boats in Croatia

Sailing yachts of 36 to 50 feet are the backbone of the Croatian fleet, and catamarans are the fastest-growing part of it because the islands are close enough that motoring between them is no hardship. Motor boats and RIBs dominate the day-charter market around Split, Trogir and Dubrovnik; gulets and larger motor yachts are found in the crewed segment.
