When to go
The Grenadines sail from December to May in the trade winds, with the Christmas weeks, the Bequia Easter Regatta and the Mustique Blues Festival in late January the busiest dates; May and June are calm and cheaper, and the season thins from July into the hurricane months. The islands are close - no passage longer than three hours - and the wind is on the beam in both directions, which makes it the best-known easy cruising ground south of the BVI.

Yacht charter from St Vincent and the Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon on the south coast of St Vincent, next to the airport, is the main base: Bequia is nine miles south across the channel, and the whole chain runs from there - Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, the Tobago Cays, Union Island and Petit St Vincent - within a week.

Sailing from Bequia and Admiralty Bay
Admiralty Bay at Port Elizabeth on Bequia is the second base and the Grenadines' sailing town: model-boat builders, the Frangipani bar, a mooring field full of cruising yachts. Starting here saves the first channel crossing and puts Mustique and the Tobago Cays a day closer.

The Tobago Cays and the southern Grenadines
The Tobago Cays marine park - five uninhabited islets behind Horseshoe Reef, turtles in the seagrass and lobster grilled on the beach - is the reason most charters come; Union Island for clearance and Palm Island and Petit St Vincent for the last nights. Grenada and Carriacou are a day further south for a one-way charter.
