The Canal du Midi runs from Toulouse to the Étang de Thau, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. It is a canal built for barges and now used almost entirely by hire boats: plane-tree avenues, oval locks, stone bridges, and wine villages close enough together that a day's cruising ends somewhere with a restaurant on the quay.
No licence is needed for any of the boats here. The bases give an hour's instruction on steering, mooring and the locks before you leave, and the locks themselves are worked by a keeper or automatically — the crew handles the ropes. Locks close at lunchtime and overnight, so a cruising day is about six hours, which is what the week below is built around.
The canal is hired in both directions. Westward from the coast you climb the Fonserannes staircase at Béziers and cross the Minervois to Carcassonne and the summit reach; eastward from Castelnaudary you drop through the same locks to Agde and the sea. A week covers Castelnaudary to Béziers one way, or a return trip from any base.

Getting there
By air. Three airports serve different reaches of the canal. Béziers Cap d'Agde (BZR) is nearest the Mediterranean end — about 10 km from Portiragnes and 40 km from Le Somail. Carcassonne (CCF) serves the middle: about 35 km from Homps and Argens-Minervois. Toulouse-Blagnac (TLS) is the one for the summit reach, about 70 km from Castelnaudary. Montpellier (MPL) is the fallback for the eastern bases, about 70 km from Portiragnes. By rail. The Toulouse–Narbonne line runs beside the canal and stops at Castelnaudary and Carcassonne; Béziers and Narbonne are on the Paris–Spain line. Castelnaudary station is a ten-minute walk from the basin. By road. The A61 follows the canal from Toulouse to Narbonne, with exits at Castelnaudary, Carcassonne and Lézignan-Corbières; the A9 serves Béziers and Agde. The bases have parking.
Canal du Midi before you cast off
From the summit reach eastwards: the Grand Bassin at Castelnaudary, a lake on the canal built to turn the barges, with the four locks of Saint-Roch at its end; Carcassonne's walled city above its canal port; the Marseillette basin and the Minervois vineyards around Homps and Argens-Minervois, with Minerve on its gorge and the Lagrasse abbey inland; Le Somail, an 18th-century bridge, a chapel and a bookshop in a barn; Capestang and its cathedral-sized church; the Malpas tunnel; and the nine-lock staircase of Fonserannes above Béziers, with Agde's black-basalt old town at the canal's Mediterranean end.
Every base on the canal has a shop, water and fuel. Castelnaudary, Homps, Argens-Minervois and Portiragnes have shops or supermarkets within walking distance; Le Somail has a floating grocery barge in season, with supermarkets at Ginestas and Sallèles. Larger shopping is in Béziers, Narbonne, Lézignan-Corbières and Carcassonne, all within half an hour of a base by road.
A week on the Canal du Midi
Day 1 — base → Trèbes (about 20 km, 10 locks from Castelnaudary; fewer from Homps). Along the summit reach through the plane-tree avenues to Carcassonne’s canal port under the walled city, then on to Trèbes for the night.
Day 2 — Trèbes → Homps (22 km, 8 locks). Past the Marseillette basin and the Minervois vineyards to the port at Homps and its wine cellars.
Day 3 — Homps → Le Somail (16 km, 2 locks). The long lock-free reach to the picture-book hamlet of Le Somail: the old bridge, the bookshop and the canal-side restaurants.
Day 4 — Le Somail → Capestang (14 km, no locks). Through the Minervois vineyards to the wine village of Capestang and its cathedral-sized church.
Day 5 — Capestang → Béziers (18 km, 1 tunnel, 7 locks). The Malpas tunnel and the Fonserannes staircase of locks down to Béziers.
Day 6 — Béziers → Portiragnes or Agde (12 km, 3 locks). The last reach towards the Mediterranean: the round lock at Agde and the coast.
Day 7 — return to base. One-way hires return by taxi; a return hire turns around at Le Somail or Homps on day 4.

How do the locks work?
Most locks on the Canal du Midi and the Burgundy waterways are worked by a lock-keeper or are automatic; the crew handles the ropes. Locks are closed at lunchtime and overnight, so a day’s cruising is about six hours.
What day do charters start?
Weekly hires usually run Saturday to Saturday or Friday to Friday, with handover in the afternoon and return by mid-morning; shorter breaks of three or four days are common — the exact times are on each boat’s page.
