Zadar is northern Dalmatia’s city and its charter port: Marina Zadar on the Jazine inlet by the old town, Marina Borik to the north-west, and the giant D-Marin Dalmacija at Sukošan ten kilometres south. The cruising ground is the Zadar archipelago and the Kornati: Ugljan and Pašman sheltering the channel outside, Dugi Otok and Telašćica beyond, the national park a day away.

The city has an airport twenty minutes from the marinas, a Roman forum on the waterfront and the best-known sunset in Croatia; June and September are the months to sail from here.

Getting there

By air. Zadar Airport (ZAD) at Zemunik is about 10 km from the city — 20 minutes by taxi, or the airport bus to the old town. By road. The A1 motorway exit Zadar 1 or 2 is 15 minutes from the marinas; paid parking inside the marinas for the week, arranged with the charter company. By ferry and bus. Jadrolinija ferries from Ancona and the islands land at Gaženica, 5 km south; the bus station has coaches from Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Ljubljana.

Zadar before you cast off

The old town is a peninsula of Roman and Venetian stone: the forum, St Donatus’ round church and the cathedral, the Land Gate and the Five Wells square. On the waterfront the sea organ plays with the swell and the Greeting to the Sun lights up after dark — the place for the evening before departure. The Krka and Plitvice national parks are day trips by car.

The green market is inside the old town walls; supermarkets are within a short walk or taxi of both marinas and the marinas have shops and fuel docks.

Can I take a boat out for just one day?

Yes — 5 boats here accept a single-day booking. A day rate is quoted for the specific boat and date, so pick your day on the boat’s own page and the price comes back live.

What is not in the price?

The figure is for the boat. Transit log, tourist tax and the APA are mandatory, set per boat, and paid at the base. Skipper, hostess, extra equipment and other services are optional and also settled at the base.

Why do some boats show no price?

7 of the 97 boats in Zadar are on request — usually larger or crewed yachts, where the rate depends on the week and the crew. They are left out of every figure above.

How far is the airport from Zadar?

Do I need a licence to charter bareboat in Croatia?

Yes. Croatia requires a skipper’s licence recognised by the Croatian authorities plus a VHF radio certificate; both are checked at the base before departure. Without them, a skipper is booked as an extra on the boat page and joins you at the marina.

What day do charters start?

Weekly charters run Saturday to Saturday. Boats are handed over from 17:00 on Saturday and returned by 9:00 the following Saturday; day charters start in the morning from the same pontoons.

Which Zadar base should I choose?

Marina Zadar and Borik are in the city, walking distance from the old town; D-Marin Dalmacija in Sukošan has the largest fleet and choice of boats, 20 minutes from the airport. The sailing area is the same.
