Volos is the port of the Pagasitic gulf and the base for the Sporades: Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos are a day’s sail out of the gulf, and the gulf itself — enclosed, calm, with the villages of Pelion along its eastern shore — is a week on its own for a crew who wants no open water. The fleet moors along the town’s waterfront quay.
The Sporades are pine-covered and quieter than the Cyclades, with a shorter season and less meltemi; June to September is the time. Volos has a small airport with summer charters and is three hours from Athens or Thessaloniki by road.
Getting there
By air. Volos (Nea Anchialos) Airport (VOL) is about 30 km — 30 minutes by taxi, with summer charter flights. Thessaloniki (SKG) is about two and a half hours by road, Athens (ATH) three and a half. By road and rail. Volos is 20 minutes off the Athens–Thessaloniki motorway; trains connect via Larissa. Parking along the port and in the town, arranged with the charter company. By bus. KTEL coaches from Athens and Thessaloniki run to Volos bus station near the port.
Volos before you cast off
Volos is a lively university town with the tsipouradika — ouzo-and-meze tavernas — along the waterfront; the Pelion villages of Makrinitsa and Portaria are on the mountain above the town, and the narrow-gauge Pelion train runs from Ano Lechonia in summer. Skiathos and Skopelos are also reached by ferry from the same port.
Supermarkets and the town market are within a short walk of the quay; fuel is delivered to the quay by tanker or from the fuel dock in the harbour.
