Catamarans in British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands are the catamaran capital of the Caribbean: the islands sit in a ring around the Sir Francis Drake Channel, every passage is in sight of the next island, the trade wind blows steadily from the east, and the anchorages are mooring balls picked up by mid-afternoon. Charters leave Tortola from Road Town, Nanny Cay and Hodges Creek, with a few from Virgin Gorda; the week is the Baths, Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Virgin Gorda's North Sound. Lagoon, Leopard and Bali from 40 to 50 feet make up the fleet, many with a skipper and cook available.
No formal licence is required; the operator asks for a sailing résumé and can add a skipper for the first day or the week. The season is November to July, with December to April the peak; August to October is the hurricane season and most of the fleet is laid up.
