Motor boats in Germany are the licence-free cruisers of the Mecklenburg lake district and Brandenburg: the Müritz, the Havel and the chain of lakes between Berlin and the Baltic, from bases at Waren, Rechlin, Fürstenberg and around Berlin. Boats up to fifteen horsepower need no licence anywhere; on the Mecklenburg and Brandenburg waterways a charter certificate issued at the base after a briefing covers most of the fleet, so a week on the lakes needs no licence at all. The season is April to October and the lakes are quiet water with locks between them.
