Sailing boats in Italy
Sailing in Italy means Sardinia, Sicily and Elba. The north-east of Sardinia, from Olbia, Portisco and Cannigione, has the La Maddalena archipelago and Corsica an afternoon away; Sicily sails from Portorosa, Milazzo and Palermo to the Aeolian islands; Elba and the Tuscan archipelago leave from Piombino, Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia. The Bay of Naples and Salerno serve Capri, Ischia and Procida. Weeks are Saturday to Saturday, the season April to October, and the mistral is the wind to watch on the Sardinian side in spring and autumn.
Bareboat needs a skipper's licence Italy recognises; the fleet is Bavaria, Beneteau, Jeanneau and Dufour from 35 to 50 feet, with the best-kept boats in Sardinia. Marinas in the Costa Smeralda are among the dearest in the Mediterranean in August; the Aeolians and Elba are mostly buoys and anchorages.
