Greece — at a glance
3,376 boats are available to book across 76 departure bases. The largest are Athens (846), Lefkada (695), Lavrion (261). The fleet is 2,063 sailing boats, 1,116 catamarans and trimarans, 95 motor boats, 75 motor yachts. Weekly prices start from €500 for a motor boat; every price on this page is the boat’s own listed rate for 7 nights, before extras.
When to go
Greece sails from April to October. The deciding factor is the meltemi, the dry northerly that blows across the Aegean from mid-June to mid-September and is strongest in July and August in the central Cyclades, where force six to seven is normal and force eight arrives in spells. June and the second half of September give warm water and a gentler wind; May and October are calm, cooler and quiet, with tavernas still open and prices a third below August. The Ionian on the west coast and the Saronic gulf next to Athens barely feel the meltemi and work in high summer for families and first-time crews. Charters are Saturday to Saturday almost everywhere; the Cyclades bases ask for an early Saturday start to use the calm morning hours.
Where to sail in Greece
Yacht charter in Athens and the Saronic gulf
The largest fleet in Greece leaves from Alimos marina in Athens, from Lavrion near the airport and from Piraeus and Nea Peramos to the west. Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses are each an easy day apart, sheltered from the meltemi by the mainland, with a harbour town every night. Lavrion is also the departure point for the Cyclades: Kea and Kythnos are a morning's sail. A day charter reaches Aegina and back.

Sailing holidays in the Ionian islands
Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca and Kefalonia are green, close together and gentle, with an afternoon breeze and lines-ashore harbours. Lefkada's marina is the second-largest base in the country, and the inland sea between Lefkada, Meganisi and the mainland is the classic first-charter week; Nydri and Palairos sit on it, Preveza has the airport across the channel. Corfu's fleet at Gouvia covers the northern Ionian down to Paxos and Antipaxos.
Boats leave from Lefkada 695 Gouvia 211 Preveza 131 Palairos 38 Nydri 31
Boat rental in the Sporades and northern Greece
Volos is the base for the Sporades: Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos are pine-covered, quieter than the Cyclades and inside a marine park with monk seals. Skiathos has its own airport and fleet; Kavala in the north opens Thassos and the Halkidiki peninsulas. Seasons are shorter here, and the meltemi is felt only on the outer islands.
Catamaran and yacht charter in the Cyclades and Dodecanese
Paros and Mykonos are the Cyclades bases: white villages, open water and the wind. Routes run south with the meltemi behind and return in stages, and a skipper who knows the islands is worth more here than anywhere else in Greece. Kos and Rhodes open the Dodecanese towards Turkey, with Symi, Nisyros, Leros and Patmos in reach and gentler summer winds than the central Aegean.

Bareboat, skippered or crewed
Bareboat charter in Greece needs a recognised skipper's certificate (ICC, RYA Day Skipper or a national equivalent) and a second crew member declared competent to the port authority - a signed declaration, sometimes a short sailing CV - so two people, not one. Skippered charter is the norm for the Cyclades in summer and for anyone who has not moored stern-to with an anchor before, which is how every Greek harbour works. Crewed catamarans and motor yachts are widely available from Athens and the Ionian, and day boats with a skipper run from Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu and Rhodes. Motorboats up to 30 hp can be rented without any licence from 18 years old - the island day-boat product, not a weekly one.
Types of boats in Greece
Monohulls of 40 to 50 feet outnumber everything else in the Aegean, where upwind performance matters. Catamarans lead in the Ionian and on crewed charters, where space at anchor counts for more, and make up a third of the Greek fleet on this page. Motor yachts and RIBs are the day-charter fleet on the islands.

What is not in the price?
The figure is for the boat. Transit log, tourist tax and the APA are mandatory, set per boat, and paid at the base. Skipper, hostess, extra equipment and other services are optional and also settled at the base.
Why do some boats show no price?
401 of the 3,376 boats are on request — usually larger or crewed yachts, where the rate depends on the week and the crew. They are left out of every figure above.
